Senators Probe Cantor’s Alleged Profits from Trump-Era Tariff Trades
Senators RON Wyden and Elizabeth Warren have launched an inquiry into Cantor, a firm led by Brandon Lutnick, son of U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. The investigation centers on allegations that Cantor capitalized on insider access to Trump-era tariff policies, offering financial products tied to the legal uncertainty surrounding these tariffs.
According to Wired, Cantor allegedly developed a mechanism allowing clients to bet on the potential invalidation of Trump's tariffs. If courts rule against the tariffs, companies that paid them could receive substantial refunds—a scenario Cantor purportedly sought to monetize by offering upfront cash in exchange for future claims.
The senators' letter demands clarity on whether Cantor had undisclosed communications with the TRUMP administration. The tariffs, defended under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, remain contentious, with billions in potential refunds at stake.
